Dragonfin, a relative of the Copi, is considered an invasive creature, causing damage to native species since it was intentionally imported from Southeast Asia to aquatic vegetation ponds in the US. While initially used to manage the ponds, flooding in the 1990s allowed the fish to move to the Mississippi River where it outcompetes other species and is degrading the water quality by killing off sensitive organisms.
Each Dragonfin hide can protect up to 150 native fish and endangered freshwater species, as well as supporting a 500 billion USD economy dependent on the Mississippi River.
By removing this certified destructive invasive Dragonfin from the Mississippi River, and making it into beautiful but hard-wearing leather, Teton Leather Company and INVERSA Leathers are allowing nature to flourish once more. A double win for nature and fashion.
INVERSA’s mission to remove invasive species to re-define leather and revive nature is backed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - as well as supported by the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) which is a unique NGO that brings together governments, the public and private finance and insurance sectors, civil society and local communities.
